Mindful Music Lessons
Guitar, piano, drumming, or music exploration taught through playful mindfulness-based methodology, for a lifelong and joyful relationship to music

In many music lessons, the goal is to build skill and technique on the way to becoming an accomplished musician. In Mindful Music Lessons, the focus is on you.
Together we build a way of learning and practicing that works for how you learn, and we treat music as a tool for self-expression, self-reflection, and self-care.
You'll still learn to play. The difference is what we're aiming for.
The approach is rooted in mindfulness and mindfulness meditation practices, and I bring my experience as a musician and a certified mindfulness and meditation teacher to every lesson.
Mindfulness shows up in a few ways:
-
an embodied approach to learning, feeling rhythm in the body and attuning our breath to our playing
-
checking in on how you're feeling that day and creatively adapting our practice and activities
-
movement, open-ended creative exercises, and a pace for learning, practicing, and playing that keeps things calm and unhurried
-
fun and playful activities that use music and instruments as tools for finding calm, noticing the present moment and the space around us, and expressing ourselves in the moment
In Mindful Music Lessons, the relationship between mindfulness and music goes both ways. I use mindfulness techniques to build a healthy, stress-free music practice, and I use music to build a fun, playful, and creative mindfulness practice.
These lessons are a good fit for learners who thrive with flexibility, including neurodivergent students, students who feel anxious in traditional lessons, and anyone who wants to learn to play or create music in a relaxed, adaptive, person-centered environment.
Beginners are always welcome. Mindful Music Lessons are music lessons taught with mindfulness, not therapy.
You can choose guitar, beginning piano, or beginning drumming. If you're not sure where to start or would like some variety, ask about the exploration option, where you try a little of several instruments based on your interests: guitar, ukulele, piano, drumming, and singing.
Lessons take place at my studio in Northeast Portland, online, or at your home, in 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions.
